Kamel Daoud is an Algerian writer and journalist. He worked for the French-language Algerian Newspaper Le Quotidien d’Oran and was its editor-in-chief for eight years. Daoud is best known for his 2013 novel The Mersault Investigation, a counterinvestigation of Albert Camus’s L’Étranger, and his 2024 novel Houris, treating the 1990s civil war in Algeria. The book led to legal actions and Algeria issued two international arrest warrants for Daoud. In France, the book won the prestigious Prix Concourt.
